1 How do I properly care for and store my stoneworking tools?

Proper care significantly extends the service life of tools by thoroughly cleaning them after use to remove dust, slurry, and stone residues, always storing grinding and cutting tools in a dry condition, and lightly oiling metal parts or treating them with corrosion protection when necessary. In addition, tools should not be stored loosely on top of one another to prevent damage to cutting edges, diamond tools should be regularly dressed to maintain cutting performance, and ideally all tools should be stored in tool cases, on shelves, or on wall mounts in dry environments.

2 What safety measures should be observed when working with stone masonry tools?

When working with stone and stone masonry tools, safety is particularly important. Protective goggles should always be worn to protect against dust and flying debris, suitable hearing protection should be used when operating loud machines, and at least an FFP2 dust mask should be worn during dry cutting operations. In addition, it is recommended to wear sturdy work gloves and safety shoes, check tools for possible damage before each use, operate machines only with suitable and approved accessories, and always carry out cutting and grinding work in a stable and controlled manner. 3 What does “SDS-plus” or “SDS-max” mean on a tool?

SDS-plus and SDS-max are shank systems for drilling and chiseling tools, primarily used with rotary hammers and combination hammers. SDS-plus Used on small to medium-sized machines. It is suitable for light to medium-duty tasks such as drilling or chiseling in concrete, stone, or masonry. SDS-max Designed for heavy-duty machines and high loads. This system is used for large material removal, heavy chiseling work, and professional continuous use. Important: SDS-plus and SDS-max are not compatible with each other. The tool must always match the machine’s chuck system.

4 Which tools does a stonemason need to get started?

This primarily includes hand tools such as point chisels, tooth chisels, and flat chisels for both rough and fine work, a suitable club hammer or stonemason’s hammer, and a rubber mallet for gentle alignment. In addition, measuring and marking tools such as a tape measure, square, and pencil are necessary to work accurately. For an introduction to power tools, an angle grinder with suitable diamond cutting and grinding discs is recommended, as it allows efficient cutting, edge finishing, and surface processing. Depending on the project, polishing pads in various grit sizes can also be useful. Protective and safety equipment is also essential, including safety goggles, hearing protection, a dust mask, and sturdy work gloves, as safety plays a central role from the very beginning. With this basic equipment, most entry-level stonemasonry tasks can be carried out cleanly, safely, and professionally.
